The application process for the Queen West Art Crawl's Outdoor Art Show & Sale has begun!

Queen West Art Crawl is currently accepting submissions from artists, artisans and craftspeople who wish to participate in the Trinity Bellwoods Outdoor Art Show & Sale as part of the tenth annual Queen West Art Crawl.

WHEN- Saturday, September 15th and Sunday, September 16th, 2012

WHERE- Trinity Bellwoods Park, 790 Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario

Participation Fee:
Early Bird Participation online fee is:
$200.00 + $26.00HST = $226.00

Early Bird Participation delivered by mail fee is:

10 Tips for Twitter to help your Etsy Shop

There is not doubt that social media (Facebook and Twitter) can be beneficial to expanding your business or etsy shop. Twitter promotion is a reason many businesses have been flocking to twitter. A lot of you may have already dipped your feet into twitter. Social media can be a powerful tool to launch or expand your crafting business and allow others to interact with your creations. Here are a few tips that I have picked up along the way:

#1 Pitch Pusher: A great quote I read "… think of twitter like the water cooler at the office". If you are constantly tweeting about your business and pushing a sales pitch your followers aren't going to be very interested in what you have to say.

#2 Be Human: Scheduled tweets can be benifital but try and mix it up with conversation too!

#3 Listen: Take a moment and listen to what others are saying. Another great quote " … twitter is like a party of strangers.", so listen to what your followers are saying, maybe anwser some questions or engage in some conversation.

#4 Be a Helper: This kindof goes with listening. Offer something to people with your tweets, information, entertainment or tips. Reply to other tweets - anwsering or commenting on other posts. A helpful tweeter will make you someone that others want to talk to.

#5 Give 'em what the want: Do a search - find out what your followers want. Perhaps your readers don't want to know that you just walked your dog, but maybe that you walked your dog and the handmade scarf by … kept me warm.

#6 Keep it light: Ensure your tweets aren't link heavy (ie. a URL with each tweet). Sometimes readers just want to read

#7 Share: Did you read an interesting article or an interesting tweet? Share it - retweet it.

#8 Promote others: This one I really love, if I see something (especially handmade), I love to promote other shops (even if they don’t promote me). RT = retweet

#9 Build lists or streams to follow a group at once (for example, I use www.hootsuite.com and have several streams, including the @TorontoEtsyST/t-e-s-t-y-people )

#10 Ask: Tweeting your blog posts and shop etsy is okay, but what about wording your tweet as a question

10 TIPS TO ROCK IT AT YOUR NEXT CRAFT SHOW

Starting out a crafting business can be scary. Most of us start online through an Etsy shop (or something similar). A great way to gain exposure for your company is to showcase at local craft shows and fairs. It’s an opportunity to network and give customers a chance to see, smell touch your products.

Going to a show for the first time can be intimidating. I have been participating in craft shows since 2007 showcasing my handmade cards and paper crafts (Made by Jacqueline).

Last year I started a new venture the Made by Hand Show, hosting craft shows. As we begin a new year, I thought it would be a good time to share my 10 TIPS TO ROCK IT AT YOUR NEXT CRAFT SHOW:

#1 GOT CHA: You have 3-5 seconds to grab a customer’s attention.

#2 DISPLAY: Space, Clean, add height or risers to grab the customers eye

#3 DEMO YOUR PRODUCT: (ie. if you sell jewellery wear it, demo your products if you can) – have a sample out that people can touch, feel, taste.

#4 WHO ARE YOU? When a customer walks by do they know who you are and what you're selling? Think about a banner or a sign.

#5 ATTRACT: Attract Customers to your booth - Free samples, Candy, games, prize draw.

#6 ADVERTISE: Tell your contacts what booth you’ll be at; maybe offer your present customers a discount for coming to the event. This is where social media and your mailing list comes in handy.

#7 SMILE: Be friendly, start conversation ‘hello’, SMILE (there is nothing worse than a vendor that seems uninterested, grumpy or bored at their booth, it turns away customers).

#8 PRICE IT RIGHT: Vary price points (for example you may have a piece that is $100 but also make sure you have something in the $20 range or lower to grab impulse buys).

#9 BUILD: Have a mailing list on your booth so customers can sign up. It may lead to a future sale and it helps build your client list.

#10 FOLLOW-UP: Post event follow-up with everyone you meet (promptly after the show). It can be as simple as a quick “Thank-you for visiting my booth”.

For members who do not read French, you may want to keep an eye on the new additional language capabilities of Etsy, which are undergoing beta-testing and will soon be available to all. Currently, it is possible to have your shop listings cross-listed in German, and French will soon be added. Other languges are planned. In such a multi-cultural city, many of our member shops are run by people who speak languages other than English. This will be an opportunity for you to cater to customers in alternate languages, and find shop-keepers who are happy to communicate in languages other than English!

You can still get Etsy items by Christmas if you shop local! DECEMBER 19 is the last day Canada Post will guaruntee regular post delivery of local mail by the 25th. If you are buying cards, or small, flat items, get them today to get them in time. Check out our 'TEST Paper Goods' category for a large selection of cards.

If you are buying larger, 3D items, you can still get holiday packages within Canada by Xpresspost if you purchase your order early enough for it to be sent by DECEMBER 21. Just be sure to let the seller know you need upgrade to expedited shipping. Most sellers will provide this service.

Have you missed your shipping deadline? Never fear! Many sellers offer gift certificates - even ones which can be sent digitally, so that you can be sure to have the perfect item to give.

Shop handmade this Holiday Season.

This holiday season, I am trying to buy as many gifts as possible from local and independent handmade artists. So I was thinking, why would someone buy handmade? Here are my Top five reasons why I will buy handmade this holiday season.

1. SUPPORT - Buying handmade shows your support for local handmade artists. Most of us (including artists) are struggling with the economy the way it is, and by purchasing handmade gifts you may help a struggling artists pay for life’s necessities. I would much rather buy a handmade gift from a local artists rather than a supporting the big-box stores.

2. UNIQUE - Handmade artists make one-of-a-kind gifts, something truly unique. Just the other day I was wearing a handmade necklace from a local artist. I got so many compliments and people asking "Where did you find that?"

3. QUALITY - Handmade artists pride themselves in providing quality with every item that they sell. For example, if I make a card and it's not perfect, I often discard the piece and start again. Another example is a handmade knitted hat that I recently purchased, you can feel the quality. Many handmade artists will ensure that every stitch, clasp or whatever is perfect. When I buy handmade I know I am getting a quality piece of work.

4. CUSTOM - I have purchased so many customizes pieces over the years. How many time have you been shopping and seen the perfect item and though "if only it was in another colour". When you buy handmade it's as simple as 'can you make this in pink!".

5. ECONOMICAL - Buying handmade is affordable (which I know is surprising to many). I would much rather spend $20 on a piece of jewellery that will last many years, then $5 on a piece that will tarnish or break in months.

So before you buy something that is in mass production, stop and think. So with the holidays right around the corner, and all the rush and fuss, don't forget about the little "gal" or "guy", the shops that are owned by local small business owners. There are so many reasons to shop handmade, I hope I have opened your eyes to just a few.

The 27th annual Book Arts Fair will be held in the GREAT HALL at 100 McCaul St., on Saturday, December 3rd. This year they are offering a limited number of half tables available for only $25.00.

T.E.S.T. interview: DinosDiedOfBoredom

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 23^rd in our series, just in time for Hallowe'en, a monster-filled interview with Sheena of Dinos Died of Boredom.

When I first read your shop name, Dinosaurs Died of Boredom it evoked for me a sense of playfulness. Upon seeing your work besides the obvious, that you like to explore interpretations of well known iconic images. I would like to ask;

Describe your process:

I start off by finding a nifty person or monster that would look cool in watercolours. Then I make some tea. I paint said subject while drinking said tea. Wait for it to dry. Photograph the painting and then post on etsy. I will often put a notice on my facebook and tumblr pages about the ‘fresh off the easel’ painting and then probably have another cup of tea. Since I already mentioned the social media outlets, why not do a a bit of shameless plugging?

What inspires you and draws you to working with iconic imagery?

I have an absolute obsession with retro. It started as a little kid bopping around my living room to Elvis and watching Leave It To Beaver when I came home for lunch. The first two CDs I ever bought were Elvis and The Beach Boys. As a teenager I started wearing vintage clothes and growing more of an appreciation for the cultural significance of the past several decades. I was always watching TV shows from the 50s-80s (loved The Munsters, Brady Bunch, Three’s Company, ALF…). I could always spend hours in a thrift or antique shop. When I was about 16, I read Frankenstein and Dracula and that set me on a path of deep love for monsters (which continues today, as can be seen by my mostly monstrous collection of paintings). Life moves horrifyingly quickly and shows/items/relics/images from an era gone by are like pieces of the past frozen in time.

Do you feel your work is a continuation of the pop art aesthetic of such masters as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein?

I’m going to go ahead and say yes. I certainly could never compare my pieces to the likes of Warhol and Lichtenstein, but I will attest to the fact that without pioneers such as them, who knows if there’d be a place in the landscape of art for quirky and kitschy paintings like mine. The pop artists of the 50s/60s really helped breakdown the distinction between high and low culture, revolting against what was typically considered fine art. As can be garnered from my lament of all things retro, I’m a big fan of pop culture (mostly from the 20s-80s). I watch a lot of film and TV (my day job is actually in film and TV) so, like Lichtenstein and Warhol, my inspiration is heavily drawn from sources of popular culture in music, movies and television.

What criteria do you use when selecting your images?

First, it has to look good in the style that I paint in (a lot of negative, white space).
Next, the subject matter has to be awesome. I love the classic monsters, so I tend to feature those creatures quite frequently. I also lean towards historic figures who have made my life a little better or more enjoyable in some way, whether it be a scientist, an actor, a musician or an artist.

It seems that you are using 'Dinosaur' as a metaphor for something that is past its time much the way we refer to, "dinosaur rock bands' for example.
How did you arrive at, Dinosaurs died of boredom?

Interesting way of looking at it. I suppose we can harken back to my aforementioned love of retro if we want to create a metaphor with the past. I never quite thought of it that way, but I like it.

“Dinosaurs Died of Boredom” actually came from a book… I have this very old book called “Strange Stories, Amazing Facts” and it is full of just what the title implies. One of those strange stories/amazing facts is the theory of Paleoweltshmerz that expresses a possible explanation for the extinction of dinosaurs. It claims that dinosaurs became so disillusioned with their ancient world that they died of boredom. I think that that is such an interesting and hilarious theory that I use it as a daily philosophy to live my life. Don’t die of boredom.

Please further define Paleoweltschmerz regarding your paintings.
Well, essentially I started painting so that I don’t die of boredom (as the dinosaurs may or may not have).

Biggest artistic influences:

Two influences who I think got to me subconsciously are Basil Gogos and Alex Pardee. It wasn’t until after I opened my etsy shop that I looked back on some of those gentlemen’s art work and I realized how they both, unbeknownst to me, crawled into my head and truly impacted my style. Gogos was an absolute master of monster art. In the 60s and 70s he painted bold portraits of ghastly ghouls, monsters and horror film actors. Most of his work was for the cover art of monster movie magazines. His dazzling use of colour and dramatic lighting create the effect that these creepy creatures are about to crawl out and get ya. He paints these ghouls in vivid colours, creating a neat juxtaposition between macabre images and happy colours, which I tend to do. Alex Pardee is in the new generation of monster artists. He also uses bright, jovial colours for his spooky drawings and there is a terrific sense of humour that comes through his art. The paint dripping off the page is an effect which he frequently employs, as do I. Again, it wasn’t until my shop was up and running for a few months that I looked back on some of Pardee’s work and I was astounded to see that, without consciously realizing it, I most likely swiped that idea from him. That’s part of the thing about pop culture, isn’t it? It’s so invasive; it penetrates your thoughts and ideas without you having any idea that it’s actually happening.

Working on now:

I’m working on a blog that I’ve started up. Seeing what the action is on this crazy blogosphere I’ve been hearing so much about. In terms of upcoming subjects for my paintings, I recently saw an excellent rendition of The Crucible performed by Ryerson University students and it has reminded me of how much I love Arthur Miller, so I think I’ll add him to the roster.

Made by Hand Show (Upclose and personal)

Let me introduce myself. My name is Jacqueline and I’m the show manager for the Made by Hand Show. I have been in the craft business since 2007, and am the creative talent behind “Made by Jacqueline” handmade cards and paper crafts. After participating in dozens of shows over the years, I decided that it time to put my years of experience as a vendor to good use. In May of 2011 “Made by Hand” was launched. At Made by Hand our goal is to promote handmade artists and artisans. Earlier this month, all the vendor spaces to the Made by Hand Show were sold-out.

As a vendor have you ever been to a show and been disappointed? For me, it is just as important that our vendors participating in the show have as good as an experience as the customers do. My biggest pet-peeve from other shows is how poorly many of the shows were advertised and how often once I paid my booth fee, that I never heard from the organizers again.

To make sure that our vendors didn’t have these same complaints, we strive to deliver solid advertising and ensure constant communicate to our vendors.

We are launching our first show on Saturday November 5^th, 2011 at the International Centre. The “Made by Hand Show” is featured in several local newspapers and 10,000 flyers were distributed through Mississauga News. I even made a TV appearance today, Monday October 24th on Rogers Cable 10 (Mississauga) daytime show. Through Facebook and Twitter, we are keeping everyone in the loop as to what is happening and when.

Where: The Made by Hand Show will be held in Hall 1 at the popular International Centre (6900 Airport Road, Mississauga, Ontario); Free parking

When: November 5^th, 2011 – 11:00am - 7:00pm
Admission: Only $1 each or $2 per family (benefiting Crafting for a Cure)
Artisans: All the 150+ vendors will be there showcasing their unique handmade items, all handcrafted in Canada.

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 22^nd in our series, an interview with CandiWareJewelry of Candiware.

First, tell us a little about you and your shop. What prompted you to open up an Etsy shop?   

CandiWare is a one-stop shop for delicious miniature food jewelry that is scented! After making my own jewelry for years, I finally decided to open my own Etsy shop because whenever I went out wearing the jewelry I had made people would always ask me where I bought my fun jewelry. At that point, it was simply a matter of time before I wanted to share my work with the public and bring a sense of fun to their lives.

How did you become interested creating such uniquely crafted jewelry?  

As a child, I always loved small toys such as Polly Pockets. In addition, I have always had a knack for crafts. When I began creating my miniature food pieces, it just perfectly fit my style!   

Other than your shop, do you have another occupation or a ‘day job’? If so, what is it? Do you have a background in jewelry design or business?   

Yes, I actually do have a day job, I work as a background painter for a Disney children’s show. I’m lucky because I thoroughly love both my work with Disney as well as my Etsy shop. In terms of my background, I have degree from the advanced animation program at Seneca College.  

Through your shop, CandiWare, you offer not only jewelry pieces, but also items for both men & women as well as some seasonal pieces. Do you find that this makes your shop constantly grow & reach diverse markets?  

Yes, I do think that having a variety of different items in your shop is a big plus. In terms of seasonal pieces, I find it is very helpful to keep your shop new and fresh! Seasonal items can also draw in buyers and hopefully, keep interested in returning to check out new items or find a new purchase.  

I love the whimsical & fun aspect of your designs, why is this an important feature of your shop?

I really believe in what I’m selling! I have found that my pieces are able to provoke laughter and enjoyment from customers or even when I’m out wearing it or at craft shows. I also meet some individuals that think my jewelry is odd or “gaudy”! I actually had a women say that to me at a craft show! I just think people like that don’t know how to have fun!  

You mention in your shop’s announcement that your food themed jewelry actually contains scent, which is almost too delicious to resist! Can you describe how you create your jewelry & how they become scented?  

When I create my jewelry, I make my pieces called, little minis, out of fimo then I add the scented oils to the clay as it’s baking. Trust me when I say they really do smell good! : D  

What is your biggest inspiration for your pieces?  

My biggest inspiration for my pieces comes from cookbooks if you can believe it! I have a lot of recipe books that are all about tarts, cakes, cookies, and other sweets. For inspiration, I simply flip though the recipes and find a sweet treat that I would love to make in a miniature form.   

Do you have a favourite piece or one you enjoy crafting? If so, which piece?  

I do have a lot of favourites! Currently, I am really in love with my teapot necklace.   

In what ways do you, CandiWarejewelry, promote your business? Are they any current promotions on your Etsy shop, CandiWare? Other than your Etsy shop is there anywhere else where readers can find out more about Candychick?  

I promote my business through various social networking sites which include Twitter, Facebook, Tumbler as well as my CandyWare Blog. For Etsy promotions, I currently have a big sale going on in my shop in order to make space for my new stock. To visit, go to the “Sale” section in my shop to see the special items on promotion.

To someone considering opening his or her own Etsy shop, do you have any advice for him or her?  

My advice to new sellers is to make sure you read the Etsy Seller Handbook and go through all of the Etsy Online Labs too. They are incredibly helpful! My main goal with my shop is to always update whether it be through my blog, Twitter, Tumblr, or Facebook. Just get yourself out there!

Melissa, the organizer, for Sale of the Century, going down Tuesday September 20 from 7-10pm is hosting a night of shopping, drinking and eating at the west-end gem of a restaurant, Zocalo.

She started out envisioning a vintage sale and it quickly turned into a night of old and new friends peddling our various wares for money, barter, hugs, promises, drinks, etc.

T.E.S.T. interview: FrameBoutique

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 21^th in our series, an interview with Meg of FrameBoutique.

First, tell us a little bit about yourself & your shop. What prompted you to open up an Etsy shop? 

My name is Meg & I’m the exclusive designer & owner of FrameBoutique, which specializes in handmade, vintage-inspired jewelry. After simultaneously completing my master’s degree in English Literature & saying, “I do” to my partner of ten years, Sean, I began teaching at a private high school in Toronto. However, I felt a creative void in my routine so I catapulted headfirst into the burgeoning world of jewelry design. Etsy is a new medium with countless possibilities, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been” (George Eliot).

My infatuation for the written word did not end when I was handed my diploma, rather it infuses my Etsy shop. Whether it is through photographing my jewelry pieces on cherished novels or upcycling tattered books into decorative poms & one-of-a-kind brooches, my literary passion has not diminished. For the majority of my pieces, I use my wedding china with its softly detailed scroll design, which is also as a reminder of my husband’s unvarying support.

When I look through your collection of uniquely crafted jewelry, your work reminds me of 1950s fashion. To be honest, it makes me want to put on one of my 50s style dresses & add one of your Hollywood Regency or cocktail rings! I must ask, what inspires your designs?

Thank you! My inspiration stems from a variety of fashion trends. While I design new pieces or sketch them out, I usually watch classic films from the 30s, 40s & 50s. I love the simple design of women’s suits with bold accents in the 30s. I recently wrote a blog post on how Howard Hawks’ His Girl Friday has influenced some of my more whimsical pieces such as my necktie or moustache necklaces. I love Rosalind Russell's wardrobe choices; she wears typically masculine clothes (suits, hats) & yet, reclaims them as feminine pieces.

Those closest to me know that my primary influence is Audrey Hepburn & her signature minimalist, silhouette style, which she always wore with bold earrings & accessories. In addition to these influences, my design is an eclectic mix of Boho Chic, Neo-Victorian, Parisian Chic, Old World & Shabby Chic styles.

What are the different textures that you love to mix the most? What ‘look’ are you going for with these pieces?

I love working with clean lines, crisp colours as well as soft shades such as blush, cream or beige. Also, floral pieces are central to most of my designs & often, I incorporate vintage items or create vintage-inspired jewelry. A lot of my designs play with the idea of contrast, usually between bold colours such as pairing vivid turquoise & bright red in an elegant pair of earrings. Lately, I’ve been using the soft texture of ribbon or lace trim as a contrast against the delicate metal work of filigree & the vintage-style of cabochon flowers, which has turned out better than I originally imagined. Now I just have to part with those pieces!

Most of my jewelry are statement pieces: über feminine, soft & minimalist. I abide by the ‘everything in moderation’ rule of thumb; with jewelry, you don’t want to over do it. Sometimes wearing one ‘statement’ piece can express more about your personality than a few colourful items. I also don’t wear or create jewelry according to the seasons - I think floral designs can add a touch of warmth in the fall & winter months. With jewelry, my philosophy is not to limit yourself to a season, but rather pick pieces that are timeless, bold.

Do you have any new & exciting designs that we can look forward to in the coming months?

By now, I think I have filled my design notebook to the brim with sketches of new designs! I would love to share a couple of my upcoming projects. One design that I’m quite excited about uses eco-friendly wooden bangles/bracelets. Essentially, I will be incorporating certain designs on paper as well as Japanese origami paper onto the wooden bangles – bright colours & chunky, oversized bangles.

Ideally, I want to create more upcycled, eco-friendly jewelry as it is such an admirable movement. I also have a new design for my upcycled necktie necklaces that reinvents them into a more feminine necklace rather than just a smaller necktie.

Do you have any tips for new Etsy sellers?  

Yes! Use social networking sites to promote your brand such as blogs, Twitter or Facebook. This gives potential clients a chance to see beyond the final product & get a glimpse into your style, sense of humour, design process & draw attention to upcoming items. The most useful resource, the Etsy Seller Handbook will improve your Etsy business if you adopt the handbook’s advice. Also, frequently listing new items will increase the chance for buyers to discover your shop. The Shop Stats feature is another fundamental tool that can help you adjust your tags accordingly, which will increase your shop’s search relevancy. Lastly, photography is one of the most important areas to tackle. Browse some successful shops & you might notice a particular aesthetic – bright exposure, clean surfaces & uncluttered backgrounds. Other than your Etsy shop is there anywhere else where readers can find out more about FrameBoutique?  

In addition to Etsy, I have a Facebook page, which has several of the same items as my Etsy shop, but also some different designs. On Facebook, I often post promotions, special sales & contests exclusive to Facebook fans (the last contest was a free pair of earrings from my shop!). I also have a Twitter account as well as a blog that focuses on new & upcoming designs, free DIY tutorials & products as well as Etsy promotions.

Cutting the arts could be an economic and social catastrophe for Toronto: not only does the city achieve a huge return on a relatively small investment, but our vibrant arts scene is also a big part of what makes Toronto a great place to live, work and visit.

Friends of the Arts* has launched an online petition to let City Councillors know that Torontonians value the arts

By signing the petition you will be sending a message to the Mayor and your local councillor telling them that arts funding should not be cut. Here are a few of the reasons why the arts might be important to you:

*Arts and culture are essential to Toronto’s economy, generating $9 billion every year.

*Arts and culture create jobs. 130,000 people work in the sector – and many more depend on related businesses, including those in hospitality and tourism.

*Torontonians care about the arts. In 2010, there were 20 million visits from every corner of Toronto to city-supported arts events.

*Every dollar Toronto invests in arts organizations attracts $17 more from private and public sources. Arts and culture funding has a great return on investment.

*Artists flock to cities that support them – yet Toronto invests less in the arts than other major cities; City Council has been working to change that, and it must stay the course.

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 20^th in our series, an interview with sisters Serena and Emily of theDADproject.

One of the great things about being part of an Etsy Street Team is meeting locals with something in common. Many (possibly most) of us on T.E.S.T. may have our own experiences with cancer in our own families, and would be happy to help raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society by doing something we love - namely making handmade things. This is what theDADproject is all about. You can follow the discussion thread about the D.A.D. project in our team forum and join other teammates in participating.

First, a little about you. I think you may be our only sister act on T.E.S.T. How did you both become illustrators? Were you competitive growing up, or is this something you enjoyed together?

As kids, we were both constantly drawing and finding ways to be creative but, surprisingly, were never competitive about it. These days, we continue to encourage each other in our separate artistic pursuits — we’ve both been lucky enough to include illustration in our careers. With The D.A.D. Project, we have found a collaborative and creative way for us to work together while dealing with the loss of our father.

You both have a sort of whimsical style, featuring animals, humour and kid-friendly illustration. Why do you think that is?

We both have pretty good senses of humour (or so we’d like to think!) and a love for animals and most things kid-related (maybe because we’re both still young-at-heart). We’re definitely glass-half-full types, and we both enjoy a good play on words.

What are your favorite media for creating?

Emily is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator, and uses her Wacom Cintiq 21UX regularly, most often with Corel Painter. Her specialty when she studied Fine Art at university was printmaking, which she still revisits by silkscreening clothing for her other side business, m chen wears.

Serena does most of her D.A.D. drawings using a Wacom tablet and stylus with Adobe Illustrator; however, when she gets the chance, she still loves using traditional media such as pen and ink, watercolours and pencil crayons.

Do you do illustration full-time?

As a freelancer, about half of Emily’s projects are illustration-based. She’s currently on a break for maternity leave but hopes to get back to the grind by early 2012.

Serena does her illustration work part-time (including drawings for The D.A.D. Project), in the evenings and on weekends, when not at her full-time job.

Congratulations on the new addition to your family!

Tell us about The D.A.D. Project and how you came to collaborate together and with other artists.

We lost our father last October after his year-and-a half battle with metastatic colon cancer. In June 2010, we launched The D.A.D. (Drawing A Day) Project — an ongoing, online, art-based fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). It’s our way to give back to an organization that was helpful to our father, as well as to others fighting cancer, and a way to do something proactive to deal with our feelings of helplessness.

Every weekday, we take turns doing a Drawing A Day (hence the project’s name), which we then put up for sale in our etsy shop. Ten dollars from every print sold of our drawings is donated to the CCS. In addition to this, we also do a weekly “Feature Friday” post on a different artist or craftsperson who has kindly donated an item of theirs to our cause; all proceeds from these sales are also donated to CCS.

How have you found the experience of using art to fight back against cancer? How have people responded?

The support and encouragement that we have received from the get-go (and that we continue to receive) has been overwhelming and incredibly rewarding. Our first orders came mainly from friends and family who wanted to support our venture. Word has spread about our project and orders now come from friends and strangers alike.

We’ve also been touched by the number of fellow artisans who have donated their work to support our cause.

What are your goals for The D.A.D. Project?

Originally, we told ourselves we would be happy if we could sell one print per week, which would have amounted to $500 in donations in our first year. As it turns out, we raised more than $4,000 through our sales in that first year, and we have also collected $1,200 in direct donations through our Canadian Cancer Society Team website page.

We are looking forward to continuing this tribute to our Dad as long as we can.

How can T.E.S.T. artists help?

We have been fortunate enough to have had a few fellow T.E.S.T. members already make donations of their wares to The D.A.D. Project (thank you for all those who have participated!), and there are a couple more in the works.

As part of being one of our “Feature Friday” participants, we list the donation in our etsy shop and include a write-up of the artist in a related blog post including photo(s) and links to their shop/sites. We also post the donation and links on our facebook page.

The Last Savage – art show and literary reading / memorial service for Randy “Macho Man” Savage Naco Gallery, Toronto, November 2011.

The art show and reading will celebrate the life of Randy Macho Man Savage, and anyone else for that matter that made your life a little easier as a child. Participants are encouraged to draw or write short pieces exploring sentimental or trivial heroes from their childhood. For me wrestling was just one little item, and now it is more a fond memory of that summer passion, to become something extraordinary , to be an invincible champion, even if it was just in my backyard, and to get excited about the maniacal fantasy of pro wrestling, that’s it, nothing more. It was never more than a doodle day dream, a way of counting sheep to fall asleep, but instead of sheep it was off the top rop flying elbow drops. I’ve been collecting commissioned drawings of Savage for the last 3 years and this show will showcase that work. The reading portion of the night will take the form of a “live” anthology of childhood hero poetry or prose.I’m looking for work that celebrates infantile and juvenile memories. So find your own Randy Savage, write something and get in touch with me about being a part of this show.

T.E.S.T. interview: Menace Creations

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 19^th in our series, an interview with MenaceCreations.

I loved the Enginearrings title and the item. How does your training as an engineer influence your art?

Thanks, I'm glad you like them! Civil Engineering is all about simplifying a problem, and capturing it's essentials. In my earlier work, I strived for photorealism to the extreme of shading individual leaves on a tree separately, or drawing individual blades of grass separately - even my "sketches" took me hours to complete, and as a result my drawings, although they were impressively accurate, lacked life and movement. In my more recent work, I've been more successful at catching the essentials of my subjects - the movement and shape, and allowing the viewer to fill in the more minute details. For example, drawings like my jellyfish are something I wouldn't have been capable of a few years ago.

I think this newfound respect for simplicity is also what has drawn me to start exploring origami again. There is something incredibly elegant about making complex shapes out of nothing but paper. I'm particularly proud of having developed my own origami/kirigami dragonfly pattern. You can see an example here .

I love the natural feel and flow of your pieces. What is the creative process behind collecting the materials and creating the pieces? Do you spend a lot of time gathering the materials?

I've always been a bit of a tinkerer and collector, and I'm very drawn to the natural world, so I find it really gratifying and cool to use found objects and upcycled vintage pieces in my work. When I crafted just as a hobby, I would just "come across" cool things every so often to craft with on hiking trips, visits to the beach or browsing through a vintage store.

Now that I'm crafting for a wider audience, I've had to start planning my supplies collecting a lot more carefully. I go on full-day seaglass-hunting outings with my ever-eager little sister, I have a circuit of thrift and vintage shops I visit on a regular basis for different supplies. I buy brass findings in bulk (conventional brass production uses over 98% recycled materials). I'm currently sourcing some fair-trade recycled glass beads for my necklaces and sari scrap ribbons to hang pendants from in place of chain. I do still use some conventional materials, but I'm working very hard to gradually transition to all environmentally-responsible materials.

It does take me a lot longer to get my materials this way. I'd say about a quarter of my crafting time is currently dedicated to acquiring materials, but I love every moment, and I know that it makes my products unique. You won't find a necklace like this one anywhere except for the Menace Creations shop.

What was the most exciting part of your venture to open the Menace Creations Etsy shop?

The most exciting moment for me was when my first notecard order arrived from the printers. It's a dream come true to have a stack of professional looking greeting cards with my artwork printed on the front and my company name and URL printed on the back. What's even better is that people are actually buying them.

Do you find a lot of support in your family, friends or community? If so how do you keep them involved?

My parents and partner are unwaveringly supportive of everything I do, which is really helpful in my moments of self-doubt. My partner has helped me with everything from photography to banner design to notecard layout, and my parents promote me on facebook. My friends are all encouraging, and more than a few have remarked on my crafts and artwork "Wait, you MADE all these things? Why the hell did you ever go into engineering?!?!"

My most avid fan by far, though, is my younger sister. She looks up to everything I do, and wants to help out every way she can. She comes materials-searching with me, gives me advice and inspiration for my artwork, even folds origami for me, and always thinks I'm the coolest older sister ever, even when nobody else agrees with her.

It's really great to have such an awesome support group.

Any suggestions or lessons for fellow creators who want to take their hobby to a greater public?

Have a clear goal about what you are trying to sell and who you want to sell it to. When I opened my shop, I really wasn't sure what I would sell except for "my crafts". I went out and bought materials for all sorts of different things, most of which ended up deciding I wouldn't sell anyway. Even now I have trouble controlling myself and not starting 27 unrelated projects at the same time, and I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out how to narrow my focus.

Which is your favorite item in your store?

I wouldn't try to sell anything that I didn't think was wonderful in some way, but I have a particular soft spot for these snail notecards.

Earlier this year I left engineering school for mental health reasons, and was feeling very down on myself. Getting back to drawing and crafting was very therapeutic for me and that little snail was one of my first sketches in years, and I'm really proud of it.

Vendor applications are now being accepted for the Made by Hand Show. This is a juried event that is restricted to handmade vendors only. The event will be held in Hall 1 of the International Centre (6900 Airport Road, Mississauga, Ontario) on November 5, 2011.

ABOUT THIS EVENT:

The primary focus of this event is to showcase the work of handmade artists and crafters in a large venue. Booth Fees are reasonably priced at $160 (plus HST) which includes a 10’ x 10’ area with a 8’ table and two chairs. A limited amount of 5’ x 8’ booths will be available for $90 (plus HST) which includes a 4’ table and one chair (based on juried selection).

Advertising will include newspaper ads, flyer distribution (minimum 10,000), portable signage rentals, online/email marketing with more to come. The event will also be displayed on the International Centre Website and on the two large LED signs in front of the International Centre. The full advertising strategy is outlined in detail on page 2 of the Vendor Application Package.

ABOUT THIS FACILITY:

The International Centre is a well-known venue and has held some of Canada’s largest and most popular events. The International Centre is conveniently located in northeast Mississauga on Airport Road south of Derry Road (minutes from Toronto’s Person International Airport). The facility is accessible from all major highways, 401, 410, 427 and 407. The facility has complimentary (free) parking for 5000 vehicles around the perimeter of the building.

In order to be considered for the first round of jurying, applications must be received by July 1, 2011. All applications received after the 1st round of jurying will continue to be reviewed and considered. In order to be considered for the 2^nd round of jurying applications must be received no later than August 15, 2011.

Rejected work is returned immediately; accepted work takes a little longer to process, at least two weeks after the deadline. Special preference will be given to those vendors who have eco, green or environmentally friendly products and services. Sage Fair will be a one-day Bohemian Marketplace full of incredible, interesting and local businesses. If you become an exhibitor, you will also have the opportunity to apply for the chance to give a talk, presentation, or workshop.

How to make a ceramic clock, with lurearts

Here are some simple tips to go along with the video. Feel free to ask questions for clarification!

It is important to compress your slab before texturing. This step also smoothes the surface so that the impressed textures show cleanly.

Using a large piece of paper below your slab allows you to slide it onto a bat without bending the clay. This will help avoid warping as the clay dries.

I create my own unique textures by carving patterns into a printmaking block. You can find linoblocks and gouging tools at most art stores.

You can use any type of circle template. This is a needle point frame I picked up at a craft shop. Using a hollow template is beneficial so you can see the pattern as you arrange it in a pleasing way.

When the slab is leatherhard, use a drill bit a size larger than the bolt in the clock mechanism. This will allow the clock part to fit after the clay shrinks through the firing process. Don`t worry if it is slightly too large since a washer is included with the mechanism to cover the hole upon installation.

Rasp the edges of the slab to clean any burrs that were left from cutting with the pintool. This will also create a sharper 90 degree edge.

Choose a glaze that accentuates the relief textures. My Waterlily glaze is formulated to puddle a smoky blue color in the recesses of the texture. Remember to glaze the side edge to create a professional finish.

Clock parts can be found online or at many craft stores. Ensure that the centre bolt is tall enough to fit the thickness of your slab. Most mechanisms have a built in hanger or come with a hanger attachment piece so the clock can hang easily from a nail.

Discovering Etsy Treasury Lists.

About a week ago or so I discovered Etsy Treasury Lists. A selfless concept allowing you to create lists of things you like from various artists and make them public for everyone to view. Of course there are a few common sense guidelines such as do not use your own items and do not use same item twice. I am not sure what was the exact trigger to get me to create my first one but it may have been seeing a lovely owl bag created by a friend of mine. So my first Treasury List is called Owl Friendly . I loved looking around for items. It is a similar feeling to creating wish lists. My approach was pretty simple for this one just use the "owl" keyword to search. Actually before anything I already remembered I had three favorite shops which had owl oriented items that I liked so I added them first.

About the same time I have received an invitation to use a new bookmarking tool called Pinterest . If you like creating Treasury Lists on Etsy then I recommend the mix of the two for various reasons, which I will explain further. Some reasons to use Pinterest:

“Pin it” allows you to bookmark pictures and create visual boards of things you see online and you like.

I wanted to have a big selection of items and then choose the 16 to put on the Treasury List.

I didn’t like to have many windows open to see which ones to add.

I couldn’t figure out if I could save a draft of the list on Etsy or if it gets published right away.

These are the steps I follow to create my lists:

When you set up Pinterest it will ask you to allow a “Pin It” button to be added in your browser.

I create my lists on Pinterest first and add as many items as I like.

Every time I see a picture of an item I like then I “Pin It” and add it to the board I have created with my specific Treasury List in mind.

This approach allowed me to work on my boards when inspiration came for me to look for various items or when I had time.

When I have at least 16 items then I go ahead and create the corresponding list on Etsy.

I have a window/tab open for the Etsy Treasury List and one open for the board on Pinterest.

In order to retrieve the link from the board: I hover over the item I want to add, on the Edit button I right click, choose to open it in a different window/tab. Once open I copy the link, close the window, and past it in the “Listing URL” in the Etsy list.

I found this a lot of fun and one possible bonus is that you are creating another venue for the respective items to be displayed. True there are not your items but oh well no harm in supporting other artists too. Unless you chose to make your Pinterest boards private (I have not checked how you do that) the boards can be visible to other people. Example of the board is here: Around the World in 16 Earrings .

I love making Treasury Lists which are meaningful to me. Since I am Romanian, Canadian living in Manchester, UK you will probably see often various artists from these places or from countries where my friends are from.

Now one warning about Treasury Lists. If you do as I did and just started don’t come back to it every other minute to see how many views and how many people liked it. I must admit I ended up like the character at end of the “Social Network”. I will not ruin it by giving more details but you get the picture ☺

Vender Call: Danforth East Arts Fair

The Danforth East Arts Fair will be held at East Lynn Park on September 17 and 18, 2011. This high-quality show grew from consistent demand for crafts at the Danforth East Community Association’s weekly farmers’ market.

We welcome applications from exhibitors working in a wide range of traditional and contemporary art forms to participate in our juried show.

We provide a welcome package for exhibitors, nearby parking, two uniformed security guards overnight, advertising, publicity, portable washrooms, acoustic entertainment, an information booth and volunteers to help with hauling.

To apply, download the application package and submit the required fee.

The early application deadline is April 30, 2011. The second deadline is June 15, 2011. Given the success of last year’s show, we strongly encourage artisans to apply by April 30 to ensure the greatest chance of acceptance. Some categories fill up quickly.

Applications are reviewed and selected by a jury. We expect approximately 50 artisans will be selected to participate in the 2011 show.

Community members and local media gave the event rave reviews. Our 2009 survey results indicated 95% of the artisans who took part would participate again.

WHERE: The Fringe Club – 581 Bloor St. West, running south from Bloor Street along Honest Ed Alley.

WHAT: This year, the Toronto Fringe has expanded its programming, and we want YOU to be a part of it!

The Visual Fringe is an un-curated collection of mini-galleries, a first-come/ first-served opportunity for artists, sculptors, painters, installation artists, graffiti artists, graphic artists—any visual artists—to show their work to the thousands of people who go through the Fringe Club. Participants in the Visual Fringe will be given a 10’x10’tent in which to show their work, a prime location just off Bloor at Bathurst, workshops on producing and publicizing their exhibitions, and use of the Fringe box office to sell their work. As with all Toronto Fringe Festival shows, the artists keep 100% of their sales.

This visual arts festival is ideal for dynamic, experimental, or provocative artists. The Fringe Festival will not interfere in the creative process or product of any artist, so feel free to take risks. Just remember that you can’t violate any hate laws. Visual artists are encouraged to apply as a collective, to create artwork on the spot, and to do whatever they want to make the experience exciting for the crowds of people passing by.

Artists or collectives must pay a $50 (+HST) participation fee, but receive 100% of the sales of their work. Artists are required to provide their own materials. The Fringe Festival is not responsible for lost or stolen art work or materials, but will provide overnight storage.

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 18^th in our series, an interview with Sara of mrhandsomeface.

Tell me where you got your name? I giggle everytime I say Mr. Handsomeface.

I have 2 adorable kitties and I love them to bits! Anybody who is a cat person knows this; sometimes the cuteness of a cat can make you say silly things. I call it Kitten Talk, it's similar to Baby Talk. 'Mr. Handsomeface' is just one of the many nonsensical things that has come out of my mouth in the presence of a kitty.

Have you always been into stationery? Do you do other "crafty" things?

I started to get into stationery and wedding invites about 3 years ago when I made the invitations for my wedding. I also made the programs and thank you cards. I had so much fun doing it that I didn't really want to stop. I bought a couple books on Illustrator, a new printer, an industrial paper cutter and I was on my way! But I've always been a crafty person. I also sew, crochet and cross stich. I'm the type of person with a hundred of half-finished projects in my closest!

Have you been in any local shows or craft fairs? Which was your favourite event?

I haven't actually had much experience with craft shows! I had a table at a Christmas Craft Show this past year. It took place in the head office of the company I work for. It went pretty good, but it was stressful! I'd like to try another one sometime. I hear there's a TESTy show coming up in April!! :)

What is your favourite season; why? :)

Summer! Wedding season! I seriously love weddings. Which is why I think it's awesome when I get to be a small part of someone's wedding with my invites or stationery. It means so much to me when people choose one of my invites for the most important party they will probably ever throw. I also love brides (and grooms!) who are into having a more off-beat wedding. Your big day is supposed to be fun! If being all proper and formal isn't your thing, then you shouldn't have to do that!

Summer is also a great time to take pictures. I'm just getting into photography, very very new in fact, but I love to walk around Toronto on a summer day with my camera around my neck. It's such a beautiful city and I think it really comes alive in the summer.

What advice would you give to someone who has yet to have a sale on Etsy?

I know everyone says this, but just keep at it. Running an Etsy store is an ongoing process. I'm constantly trying to improve my photos, come up with new designs and get more active in the Etsy community. It takes time, but I think the most important thing is that you love what you are selling. If you're really proud of your work, others will see that. Also, make sure you show your buyers the person behind the Etsy store. That's one of the awesome things about buying handmade, you know there's a real person who put a lot of love into what they're making.

Where do you see Mr. Handsomeface in 5 years? What is your "dream" for Mr. Handsomeface?

My absolute dream would be to work on Mr. H full time. I have so many ideas and so many things I want to create and just not enough hours in the day. It would be my dream job to make wedding invitations all day. I know I have a lot more to learn about design before I can turn that dream into reality, but it's always something that's in the back of my head. I'm also trying to keep better track of my sales and expenses. This year I started putting all my numbers into a spreadsheet so I can see where I stand. I gotta tell ya, it's surprising me so far!

In response to the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Nathalie Roze and Co. are organizing a fundraiser to help support the survivors of these tragic events.

T.E.S.T. Interview: Landfill Designs

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 17^th in our series, an interview with Emma of LandfillDesings.

Tell us a bit about yourself. How long have you been making jewelry?

My earliest memory of actually making jewellery was when I was 12 or 13 and I dipped pieces of old spring into my brothers neon yellow model paint and then (when dry) I attached them to two ear wires I’d scavenged. I was so proud of myself and my neon yellow spring earrings. It was the 80’s, and neon was huge in my Jr. High school and I’d just had my ears pierced so very quickly everything I could put on an ear wire became an earring. Lego, candy, Barbie boots, you name it I wore it dangling off my ear. Really nothing much has changed. I’m still focused on found objects, especially if they’re free, and I still like using “strange” components or pieces that other people might not consider.

Where do you find your materials?

I find stuff everywhere. Thrift stores, eBay, antique markets, the beach, and of course bead stores. I think I’m always shopping, pretty sure my boyfriend would agree with that statement! I’ve also been known to buy current “fashion” jewellery and then take it apart for its components. And friends, all my friends now give me pretty glass bottles or all their broken jewellery.

I love that you're making something pretty out of items most people would consider trash! Tell us about why you choose the materials you do.

From an early age I remember going to garage sales with my Grandfather, we’d go early in the morning, 6 or 7AM, and he’d be bargain hunting. Looking for something that was worth more than what it was being sold for, he was a Watchmaker and jeweler and knew a lot about antiques and collectibles. So we all not only absorbed a lot of that knowledge, we also absorbed that bargain hunting gene. Garbage or “trash” truly is another man’s treasure. I’ve gotten furniture, computers, and collectibles, all out of the garbage. Just because someone doesn’t want them anymore doesn’t mean they aren’t good!

How do you promote your work?

I do a lot of blogging, and twittering, and facebooking. I need to do more, and I do plan to do more as this grows, I’m just not sure what that “more” looks like yet. Probably more blogging. I really like blogging. :)

What are your plans and goals for Landfill Designs?

To be honest I don’t have big plans for Landfill. I see Landfill as always remaining a small but very active part of my creative life. I don’t want to create full time, but I’ll always need a venue to allow my creations to get out into the world, but I don’t see Landfill as the main event. There are many other ventures I want to explore, and Landfill will be a part of that, but Landfill won’t be the focus.

Do you have any tips for new Etsy sellers?

Don’t get discouraged if your first sale is a long time in coming! To date I’ve only ever had ONE sale on Etsy, and that was very recently! But that’s not to say that Etsy hasn’t been very successful for me, I sell things because of my items being listed on Etsy just not through Etsy. Oh, and one other thing! If you can, list one thing a day! It keeps your shop fresh, and keeps you “on the top” so to speak! And blog, blog, blog! Blogging is your friend!

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 16^th in our series, an interview with Jacqueline of MadeByJacqueline.

What got you started in this art-form of card-making?

I got a scrap-booking kit as a gift and took a crop class; soon after I began making handmade cards for family and friends. With the compliments I received I started making more and participating in local craft sales.

How long have you been doing this?

It all started in 2007; however it was not until 2008 that it became a real hobby. Just last month I decided to open my etsy shop to share my handmade creations.

Do you do customized cards?

Yes of course. I actually just completed two custom cards for a fellow TEST member. She wanted a 40th card for someone that likes wine; and a 60th card for someone who enjoys reading.

Beside Etsy how do you sell and advertise your business?

I have my blog which I add to daily with new creations, card challenges and fun giveaways. Recently I have joined twitter (@madebyjacquelin); I participate in local forums and provide updates to my mailing list. I participate in regular craft shows (usually in the spring and fall).

What do you do as a day job?

LOL ... I am in engineering ... far stretch from art; but I love that my crafting is a great escape.

I'd also like to add that besides handmade cards I make a lot of unique paper crafts such as my tile art (see photo), post it holders (see photo) and friendship seeds (see photo).

T.E.S.T. interview: nanopod

We hope to introduce you to all the great etsy sellers to be found right here in Toronto. Here at the T.E.S.T. blog, we plan to interview them all. This is the 15^th in our series, an interview with Tosca of nanopod.

My first thought while perusing through your shop was Jules Verne meets Darwin. You have this incredible way of creating a magical, whimsical piece that has a scientific backbone. Can you tell us more about the way you merge these two, generally opposing worlds?

I am actually very much interested in the work of Leopold and Rudolf Blashka, who represented the natural world in their glass works as well as the drawings of Ernst Haeckel. I don’t necessarily think of my work as whimsical but perhaps like any scientific theory I may someday be proven wrong. ;)

There is a great deal of biological, anatomical and geological aspects to your art. Where does this come from? Do you have a background in science? And then can you elaborate on how you became an artist?

If we look back in Art History at some of the great masters (I am not saying that I am a master! Or great!), they were virtually inventing the sciences, in aide of accurately depicting the Human form and nature around them. To be an artist has not always been an exclusive pursuit of mine. I do not know how to elaborate on how I became an artist but I’ve always done exactly what it is that I’ve wanted to do!

I understand you have your own studio – is making art your full time job or do you specialize in anything else?

I teach metal + glass workshops and courses out of my studio. I am also a resident artist at the Ontario Science Centre, where I teach monthly workshops. So, yes I suppose I am a full time artist. As far as specializing in anything… Thank you though I'm not sure I've gotten there yet.

Some of your pieces come with a book and CD of music – I am so curious to know what’s in the book and what kind of music goes along with your art! Can you tell us more or is it a surprise for the buyer?

Well, the book & CD are for sale. ;) Andrei’s music is available on iTunes.

There is always music playing at my studio: electronic, ambient soundscapes, techno, classical, etc. Music influences my work; my work influences new musical collaborations. I've been incorporating music/soundscapes into my singular work and installations since the mid 90's.

I created an installation for Digifest 2003, at the Toronto Design Exchange called, Transgenic Morphosis. It was at this point Andrei and I started to collaborate musically together. Andrei understands where I am striving to take viewers, listeners with my work, and the landscapes I hear. For this installation Andrei and I also worked with artists Steve Storz and Lily Yung creating visuals and sound bytes.

The book & CD you reference were created for, An Unnatural History. This work was featured during SOFA, NY09.

The music is synergistic with my work; think of it as a soundtrack.

How on earth do you come up with such unique ideas? Where does your inspiration come from?

It's said, Nothing original exists because every thing has already been done...
Maybe. Though concepts, ideas and inspirations can be reinterpreted, re-imagined. I aspire to bring people into the worlds I see, and sometimes inhabit. Cellular, nanotechnology, biomechanical, String theory, astronomy, lucid dreams, tardigrades, Eno, Klaus Schulze, Max Ernst, Haeckel, movies, books, the crazy world I inhabit is full of constant inspiration.

You’ve been on Etsy for some years now (since 2006) and have been quite successful. Tell us more about your experience with Etsy over the years, and any insider tips that have brought so many buyers to your great shop (i.e.: how do you promote yourself?).

When I first heard about Etsy I recall thinking, "Etsy, what does that mean?" I quickly googled it, went to the site and joined. Back then I think there was something like 20,000 Buyers & Sellers. Initially I viewed it as 'gallery' of sorts. A place to possibly network.

Several months passed and I thought nothing would sell, as my prices were higher than most of the other Sellers. My first item sold for $300+ to a Buyer that has grown into a collector. I gradually added items that sold for under $100, $50, $30
And sales started to increase.

I've found the Showcase a great venue to promote work. Generally the Jewelry category is sold out so I've purchased via ‘mediums used’ or in the Sculpture, Art and Geekery showcases, which rarely seem to fill.

My work started getting blogged in the States, throughout Europe and else where!
Commenting on other people's Treasuries, even when you aren't featured, can often bring new people to your store.

Use an Avatar that will grab people's attention.

Anything you want to share about any up and coming plans?

An installation is in the works for Nuit Blanche. I hope team members

Vender Call: Brampton Arts Council 'Art in the Open'

CALL FOR ARTISTS: Art in the Open

The Brampton Arts Council is calling for artists and artisans to participate in our annual event “Art in the Open” featured at the Brampton Farmers’ Market. After 2010’s record-breaking year in attendance and sales, we look forward to the 12th year of Art in the Open. Find out why an estimated 65,000 people attend the Farmers’ Market seasonally.

Operated by the Brampton Arts Council, Art in the Open allows Brampton’s visitors and residents access and exposure to original, hand crafted works of art. Artists and artisans providing this service make our event an authentic community and cultural experience.

Art in the Open begins every Saturday 7am-1pm - rain or shine - from June 18th to October 8th, 2011. It is located in the south portion of Garden Square at the North East corner of Main Street and Queen Street in Brampton, Ontario.

How long have you been knitting or crocheting?

I have been crocheting since I was 5 and knitting for 25 years.

In your profile I noticed you have two etsy shops - what makes dylanadesigns different?

Dylana Designs sells knit and crochet designs and The Joy of Knitting (my other shop) retails new yarns, books, magazines, patterns, knitting needles and accessories, plus a few cross stitch kits. Brands like, Aero, Debbie Bliss, Fil Diamond Yarn, Inox, James C Brett, Patons, Sirdar, Stylecraft, Schachenmayr Nomotta, Kertzer, Vogue, to name a few, at excellent prices.

Do you make your own patterns? Where do you get you inspiration from?

I design and make all my own patterns. I get inspired and creative when looking at nature, architecture and colour. Customization is a major part of my business and I get most of my sales this way.

What is your favourite item to make?

I love to knit and crochet everything but my most fun thing to do is one-of-a-kind bags from different materials. I just made a bag from all biodegradable material.

What is your day-job?

I am an Office Manager/Executive Assistant with over 20 years experience.

Other then your etsy shop where else do you sell your items?

I sell at showcases and open houses.

My other business, The Joy of Knitting, is 12 years old.

What? A diverse mix of local makers of fine, cool, funky, sassy art and craft selling their wares at the stunning Fox Theatre in the Beaches. The sale is from 11am to 5:30 pm.

Fox Theatre together with T.E.S.T. member GirlCanCreate is looking for a variety of makers. Whether you make jewelry, clothes, art, stuffies, zines, buttons…we want you.

Please note that we cannot accept any makers of food or drink due to building health codes.

We’re putting on an indie folk mini-fest/craft fair on March 4th at the Kapisanan Philipine Center For Arts and Culture in Kensington Market and we’ve got a killer lineup, featuring The Elwins, Union Duke, The Box Tiger + Friends, LUM (Liam from First Rate People solo project) and Spirit Oak. Gladstone Hotel Presents Hard Twist 6 – Obsession
Sixth Annual Juried Show Of Textile-Based Art

Exhibition Dates: Nov 25, 2011 – Jan 29, 2012

For Hard Twist 6 – Obsession Co-curators Helena Frei and Chris Mitchell invite artists to submit textile and fibre based works, which reflect or explore obsessive ideas, acts, or fixations through medium, technique, or concept. There are only three criteria; work must:

* be textile or fibre based
* actively address the theme of Obsession
* be designed to hang on a wall or be suspended from a ceiling – we are unable to accept free standing work due to the nature of the exhibition space Hard Twist has become an important annual event within the Canadian textile art community as well as being a signature event for the Gladstone. For this sixth anniversary of Hard Twist, exhibition space will include public spaces on all four floors of the hotel.
