Welcome Back Toronto Craft Alert!

Monday, January 31, 2011

Local favorite the Toronto Craft Alert (the TCA) is back from its 6 month hiatus! They are switching up the content a little, no longer accepting submitted listing and moving to more personal content on "great exhibitions, makers, etc. worthy of sharing with y'all". Never fear - resources for artists and craftspeople in Toronto are still found on their forums, including Craft Shows - Vender Calls and Exhibitions - Calls for Submissions sections.

We here at the Toronto Etsy Street Team look forward to seeing what they come up with and reading all new Toronto crafty news. We missed you - welcome back!

Vender Call: the Clothing Show

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

THE CLOTHING SHOW is looking for vendors to exhibit in the Fall 2010 Edition, happening this September 24-26 at the Better Living Center, Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto.

The Clothing Show is a bi-annual shopping event that began in Toronto in 1977, specializing in vintage and collectible items. Over the years, it has evolved to become a launching pad for new designers and artisans; and today promotes over 300 booths of unforgettably unique, locally-produced goods.

In keeping with our mandate to showcase new and upcoming local talent, The Clothing Show is inviting emerging fashion designers to exhibit their designs in the show and on the runway.

We are also looking for local vendors of vintage and recycled items; as well as purveyors of earth-friendly products to be featured in our new Eco section.

Additionally, we provide over 1,000 ft of commission-free gallery space for local artists to display their work.

If you're interested in participating in The Clothing Show, please visit here and download one of our Exhibitor's Kits for information and application forms.

Also, the City of Craft is behind a call for submissions for Love and Money

At the Ontario Crafts Council Gallery
December 16-31, 2010
Reception: Thursday, December 16, 7-10pm

City of Craft (in partnership with the Ontario Craft Council) is seeking submissions for a group exhibition that will take place at the Ontario Craft Council Gallery as a part of City of Craft’s 2010 off-site programming. City of Craft is Toronto’s largest independent craft sale and weekend-long event featuring craft-based installations, free workshops, and craft-related programming.

This year’s exhibition will explore the broad relationship craft and crafting has with commerce. Craft(ing) is currently a multi-billion dollar industry. From mainstream craft media personalities and the DIY Network to hipster how-to guides, mega craft fairs and fabric designers du jour, the commercial nature of the contemporary “crafting” movement often seems to starkly contrast the idea of crafting for necessity from days gone by. On the other hand, there are people who turn to craft and craft processes for a sense of transcendence and autonomy. Many would argue that there is more of a need to craft for crafts sake now than ever-- either to re-skill ourselves for an uncertain future, or simply to learn to slow down.

Are money and craft strange (or natural) bedfellows? How does craft transcend issues of commerce? How do you navigate or perceive the dichotomy of craft for love/craft for money? Work that addresses any facet of the above ideas is welcomed as a submission. Submissions of fine craft, indie craft and art are encouraged.

Love and Money is curated and coordinated by Tara Bursey.

Submission forms, and this call can be found here.

Events, Vender Calls and the Toronto Craft Alert

Thursday, July 8, 2010

The Toronto Craft Alert writes one of our favorite blogs and is a great resource to artists, artisans, craftspeople, makers and buyers in and around Toronto. The bloggers are taking a well-earned break, a 6 month hiatus. We'll miss them while they are off-line, re-vamping the site. In the meanwhile, they are encouraging people to take full advange of the TCA forum as a way to communicate with one another.

Whenever we've been contacted by organizers of arts, crafts or vintage shows (both team members and not) we've been happy to pass on the information. Especially during the TCA hiatus, we at the T.E.S.T. blog would like to encourage anyone to let us know if you are looking for local hand-makers and vintage sellers. We will help get the word out to the Toronto Etsy Street Team and all readers of this blog, or our twitter feed or fans of our Facebook fan page.

Upcoming events include:

Art-oberfest at the Tranzac club - October 9th, 2010.
